A few of us went up for a “spring” trip to Drummond Island. It took 10 hrs to get there, we had a bridge closure, lost power at a restaurant in Mackinac City, lost power at the rental and had a Jeep recovery after a catastrophic front axle failure, then left early because of an impending blizzard. In between, we had a ton of fun and unforgettable adventure!

That is a gnarly front axle failure. What happened?
The Jeep was climbing and bumped off a rock, shot sideways and clipped a tree. The tires were 38x13.50s on what I believe was a stock Dana 44, so lots of stress and weight and an unfortunate bounce. It’s another reinforcement for me to stay with a lighter 35” tire, although this trip did illustrate that getting the belly of my non SQ Badlands up a little bit will help a lot in these deep snow scenarios. 2” lift is on the plan for this summer.
