Hopefully this information will help others with winches or for those looking to add one to your Bronco.
For background, I bought a Harbor Freight Badlands 12k lb. winch (synthetic line) and Rough Country High winch mount in December 23. I mounted the winch and was generally happy with the set up (note, if I was starting over, I would have probably bought a more compact winch, using the RC mount).
The winch did seem to deflect more than I expected when in use, but it worked to extricate myself and several others in the year I had it - until three weeks ago. I was at an off road park and pretty well stuck, long story short, when pulling myself out of the situation I was stuck in, those spotting me yelled “Stop”. My winch had deflected 4-5" and it was clear the mount and potentially more had failed.
After I got back to my garage and got a look, it was clearly the Rough Country winch mount that had failed, but it made the way the winch was mounted an obvious weak spot.
*Note- After full teardown the bumper mount and frame ends did slightly deform when the winch mount failed.
Good news- Rough Country was awesome about replacing the defective mount. When the new mount came in, it was obvious the first mount was a manufacturing defect. There were no welds on the bottom of the mount tabs. If you buy the RC High Mount, carefully inspect the welds.
The winch mount never felt as solid as I would have liked. I have also observed several other Broncos having issues with the mount and deflection in other situations. Offer doing some research and talking with a few of the guys that know more than me about this stuff, I ended up going with this kit-
I will update the post in the future, but my initial reaction is, man it is stout!
Installation took way longer than I planned (6+ hrs. and it’s not completely buttoned up) but @BillT (who also help me complete the install) already has his on order. In my opinion, this kit or something similar, that ties further back on the frame and boxes the frame end is a requirement.
I think Bill has some better pictures. He may add or maybe we can video the install on his Bronco.
Highlights of the install-
-
Instructions don’t exist, the short YouTube install video does detail the procedure, but it is not clear. I had to learn through trial and error a few times, trying to follow the instructions.
-
The fit is tight, millimeters tight in every dimension. I’m not sure if it was the slight deflection in the bumper mounts from the mount failure or manufacturing variance, but it took some customization. Angle and bench grinders were employed.
-
The install is all in a very tight area as well. It required making my own “stubby” 15 mm wrench and it is tedious to get to the top frame bolt and keep the pieces together while test fitting everything.
-
I could have done the entire install myself, other than the winch mounting, but it was way easier and faster once Bill T joined the effort.
Let me know if you have any questions and I strongly recommend the kit (unless you have the Ford Motorsport kit that already that has similar reinforcement).)
